After a glorious break in the countryside with family, I’m looking forward to getting back to the studio tomorrow. This vase was commissioned by a friend (and she loves it!). I now have another similar commission in progress. Let’s hope it hasn’t dried out too much in the heatwave!

Some days there are more fails than successes. But it’s all a learning opportunity - on the 2nd pic you can see where the walls of this bowl got too thin.
At least unfired clay is infinitely recyclable, so this stack of failed pots can become other successful pots ♻️

It was wonderful to connect with people in my local area at the East of Chats Yard Sale and see many of my pots find new homes, from mugs to berry bowls, spoon rests, vases and trinket dishes. Also I can hardly believe that ALL of my seconds and samples have been sold, and that means I now have space to get creative again! A huge thank you to all the people who stopped by and bought some of my work, and sent others my way.

I’ve made loads of different types of handles over the years, in a variety of shapes and using different techniques. I think I know what type I like best though. It’s those wonderfully organic ones that look like they’re growing out of the side of the pot. Of course “pulled off the pot” handles are (I think) the hardest to master but I’m getting there…

Glazing my berry bowls.

Progression ↗️ When a friend commissioned me to make a 20cm tall curvy vase I thought “of course I can do that!”
Turns out that 20cm is taller than I realised. Partly because clay shrinks during drying and firing, and partly because putting curves in makes the pot shorter. I needed to start by throwing a cylinder around 26cm tall to end up with a 20cm tall vase. My first attempt failed - not enough clay and it got too thin so I turned the bottom half into a plant pot. Then I started getting closer to the height and shape I was after but had a few major wobbles that meant I had to cut the top off. Finally I threw a cylinder tall enough and coaxed it into the required shape without losing control. Success! (The time lapse videos show attempts 1 and 2 including plenty of disastrous moments…)

I didn’t know what a berry bowl was until a few months ago. Just think, I used to wash berries in my hand! They are actually quite useful little colanders to have in the kitchen.
Tried out some different designs here. Making and refining the little holes took absolutely ages! Power tools next time? Stay tuned for the final results.

Six months into doing pottery more seriously and this piece feels like a bit of a milestone. I set myself a challenge with this one, a vase thrown in two parts and joined. It was a bit scary at the time (see my earlier reel), but I really enjoyed the process.
I’m pleased with how it came together, and it’s a good reminder that it’s worth pushing yourself beyond what’s comfortable once in a while.

After joining them I spent some time teasing up what was the base ring of the top half to make a longer neck for this vase. My hands were shaking! But it worked. Over 30cm tall (need a bigger ruler…) Can’t wait to trim and fire it.
